A Texas SR-22 is a certificate that certifies to the state that you have auto insurance that meets minimum coverage requirements. The company that issues the certificate is also required to notify the state if your coverage lapses.
If your license to drive is suspended or revoked you may need to get an insurance policy that includes the SR22 certificate to restore your license. This can be a problem because many insurance companies will not sell you a policy if your license is not valid. Fortunately some carriers will issue a policy for drivers with a revoked or suspended driver's license.
Just getting a SR-22 will not restore a suspended or revoked license. You need to submit the certificate to a DMV compliance location. You will also need to pay a reinstatement fee that is usually $100 to $125. In some cases the state of a court my impose other requirements.
There are different types of policies that include an SR-22. One option is a non-owners policy. You can use this option to get your certificate if you don't own a vehicle; or you can get this in combination with another policy that doesn't include an SR22. Some carriers offer an SR22 option with a standard policy. Another option would be to get the certificate with a motorcycle. You only need one certificate even if you have multiple vehicles and/or insurance policies in the household.
If you need a Texas SR22 here are some suggestions:
- Deal with an agency that offers this type of policy and is knowledgeable about SR-22's
- Ask about your options for the type of policy and coverage's
- It is advisable to get more than the state minimum for liability coverage
- When you get your SR-22, be sure to pay on time to avoid a lapse. A lapse will usually result in your license being suspended. Then you will need to repeat the reinstate process and pay another reinstatement fee
